Jana Svobodová (CZE) delivered a strong performance in cross-country skiing, taking home silver in the girl’s freestyle event. She also played a pivotal role in helping the Czech Republic claim a bronze medal in the relay event, showcasing her versatility and endurance.
The Netherlands dominated the girls’ speed skating events, with Wieteke Cramer (NED) winning gold in the 500m race and silver in the 1000m. Her teammate, Helen van Goozen (NED), joined her on both podiums, securing silver in the 500m and taking the top spot in the 1000m, highlighting Dutch strength in the sport.
Marek Hauptmann (GER) excelled in the boy’s short track speed skating events, earning two medals. He claimed silver in the 1000m race and added a bronze in the 500m event, cementing his place as a multi-medallist in the competition.

ABOUT SUNDSVALL 1997

The 1997 edition was hosted in Sundsvall, Sweden, a city well-known for its winter sports facilities and favourable snow conditions. With participation from 41 European Olympic Committee member countries, the event offered competitions in sports such as cross-country skiing, speed skating, and figure skating. Sundsvall provided a strong Nordic atmosphere, focusing on traditional winter sports, and paved the way for many young athletes to later succeed in senior international competitions.
