In an intense cross-country battle, Yuliya Chepalova (RUS) and Kristina Šmigun-Vähi (EST) shared podium honours in two events. Chepalova claimed silver in the 5km classic and gold in the 7.5km freestyle, while Šmigun-Vähi took bronze and silver in those respective events, cementing a fierce rivalry.
Russia’s Ivan Kovalev and Sergey Skvortsov dominated the men’s cross-country, each earning a gold and silver. Kovalev won the 7.5km classic, followed by Skvortsov in second, before Skvortsov claimed gold in the 10km freestyle, with Kovalev taking silver.
Belgium’s Stijn Turcksin clinched victory in short track speed skating, securing gold in the 1000m individual event. He also contributed to his country’s silver medal in the 3000m team relay, making a standout performance for Belgium.

ABOUT AOSTA 1993

The inaugural Winter EYOF took place in Aosta, Italy, in 1993. This marked the first winter edition of the multi-sport event for European youth, with athletes from 33 countries competing in sports like alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and biathlon. Aosta’s mountainous region provided ideal conditions for winter sports and set a high standard for the event’s future hosts. The event set a precedent for future winter editions and featured promising athletes from across Europe. It was the beginning of what became a prestigious biennial gathering of young athletes.
