On a chilly Friday afternoon at the Bakuriani Freestyle-Snowboard Course, the excitement was palpable as young snowboarders showcased their skills in the Boys’ and Girls’ Snowboard Big Air qualifications. Athletes from across Europe battled it out on the packed snow, with competitors representing 18 countries in the boys’ event and 13 in the girls’. In the Boys’ Snowboard Big Air qualification, Unai Lopez Sousa from Spain emerged as the standout performer, clinching the top spot with a best score of 95.50. Demonstrating impressive technique and flair, Lopez Sousa delivered two solid runs that captivated the judges and earned him a place in the final. Following closely was Finland’s Pyry Posio, who secured second place with a best score of 94.75, while Ugo Pirolli from France rounded out the podium in third with a score of 91.50. Notably, Pirolli’s consistent runs showcased his potential as a strong contender for the finals.

The competition featured a total of 29 competitors, with the top 12 advancing. Among those who qualified were Reef Matt Hasler from Switzerland and Lenny Collomb Paton from France, both displaying commendable skills on their boards. Meanwhile, the Girls’ Snowboard Big Air saw Swiss snowboarder Lura Wick take the lead with a remarkable best score of 86.75. Her performance was characterised by smooth transitions and confident landings, which clearly impressed the judges. French athlete Aono Pordie Okaniwa secured second place with a score of 81.25, while Katja Dutu from the Netherlands claimed third with a score of 80.75. The top eight competitors from this event advanced to the finals, setting the stage for an exciting culmination of their efforts.

With conditions described as light snow and temperatures hovering around -7°C, the competitors tackled the course’s challenges head-on. The judges, comprising a mix of experienced professionals, ensured that scoring was fair and reflective of the athletes’ talents.
